Dealing with complaints
The HMT Leipzig is committed to respectful, non-discriminatory and safe coexistence. We take incidents of discrimination, sexual harassment, discrimination or other abusive behaviour seriously.
Those affected and observers should feel protected when they file a complaint or report problematic behaviour. Our goal is to ensure a fair and transparent process that protects both the person affected and the rights of the accused.
Depending on the situation, informal or formal steps may be taken. The choice of measures is based on the severity of the incident, the wishes of the person affected and the legal framework. The focus is on maintaining anonymity and avoiding retraumatisation.
The following is a list of possible measures that may be applied depending on the individual case.
The members of the Vertrauensteam are your points of contact for all these issues.
Depending on the severity and circumstances of the individual case – while maintaining the anonymity and protection needs of the person concerned – the following informal measures may be considered:
- Personal conversation between the person concerned (if necessary, in the presence of a trusted person) and the accused person; if desired, a discussion facilitator may be called in.
- A meeting between a superior or responsible contact person and the accused person – with reference to the prohibition of discrimination, disadvantage, sexual harassment or violence.
- Mediation by conflict counsellors or another neutral body.
The Vertrauensteam is responsible for receiving and processing concerns and informal complaints. Formal complaints are handled by the Rector's Office.
If informal complaints are unsuccessful or appear insufficient given the seriousness of the incident, formal measures may be initiated by the university management. These may include the following sanctions:
- Formal disciplinary meeting
- Verbal or written warning
- Written warning
- Transfer
- Exclusion from courses or university facilities
- Ban from the premises
- De-registration
- Termination with or without notice
- Disciplinary proceedings (e.g. reprimand, fine, salary reduction, removal from service)
This list is not exhaustive. The type and procedure are based on the applicable legal provisions.
The HMT Trust Team

- Abuse of power and exclusion
- Sexual discrimination and violence
- Physical or psychological violence
- Bullying
Students who are unsure whether their concern falls within the team's remit are also expressly invited to get in touch. If desired, discussions can be held in the presence of a second person.
The trust team guarantees absolute confidentiality to all those seeking advice. Any disclosure of information or further action will only take place after prior consultation with the person concerned.
