„Zu meiner völligen Zufriedenheit“ – Learning Kurrent using historical study documents

The Long Night of the Sciences will take place on 20 June 2025. The university library and archive are taking part with a workshop on transcribing historical study documents in Kurrent script.

The university's archive contains historical sources on the student body and the university's faculty since its foundation as the ‘Conservatorium der Musik’ in 1843. These materials have now been digitised and served as the basis for the CARLA database, but contain much more information.

Leipzig residential addresses, family affiliations and musical backgrounds are examples of interesting insights into the lives of students at the time. The documents available in Kurrent script are to be transcribed to make them more accessible.

In our Long Night of the Sciences event, participants will learn to read Kurrent script after a brief introduction and then transcribe selected student documents under the guidance of archive and library staff. Afterwards the results will be published on Wikisource.

15 minute long introductory lectures take place on the hour (5 pm, 6 pm, 7 pm)
