Dear readers interested in the CARLA database of the University of Music and Theatre Leipzig,

It hasn’t been long since our last newsletter and we are delighted to be able to bring you more wonderful news!

Current state of completion

CARLA is now live!

But now the most important news since the beginning of our newsletter: CARLA is live! The user and research interface is now freely available and can be used from anywhere without restrictions.

You can now make full use of all CARLA functions and data at https://carla.hmt-leipzig.de.

We continue to welcome feedback of all kinds. Please send an e-mail to carla@hmt-leipzig.de

CARLA introduces itself in Frankfurt

On September 19 2024, we were able to present CARLA at the annual conference of IAML Germany in Frankfurt am Main to the colleagues present as well as guests from music libraries and archives connected via Zoom.

We were delighted with the positive feedback we received after the presentation. We were also able to gather ideas for the further development of CARLA in many stimulating discussions.

Thank you!

As we do at the end of every newsletter, we would like to thank you for your continued interest in CARLA!

We are pleased to be able to make CARLA available to the public and hope that our offer will help you in your work.

If you have any further questions or comments about the CARLA database or any of the issues mentioned in this newsletter, please do not hesitate to contact us at carla@hmt-leipzig.de.

We hope you enjoy researching with CARLA!

PS:

As always, we would like to present a special student from our records to you.

Bertha Maria Júlia Lutz only studied at the Leipzig Conservatory for just under a month in 1913, but we would still like to share the story of this remarkable woman with you.

Born in São Paulo in 1894, the daughter of the Brazilian physician and biologist Adolfo Lutz was interested in something completely different from music from an early age, namely frogs. After scientific studies at the Sorbonne in Paris and in Rio de Janeiro, she began her brief musical studies in Leipzig.

In 1922, together with other women, she founded the first Brazilian women’s rights organization. In the same year, she became a delegate at the 1st Pan-American Conference of the Federação Brasileira pelo Progresso Feminino. As a member of the preparatory commission for a new Brazilian constitution in 1932, she was able to play a significant role in shaping it. In 1933, women’s suffrage was enshrined in this constitution. In 1945, she was a member of the Brazilian delegation at the San Francisco Conference, where the United Nations was founded and where she was one of only four women to sign the UN Charter.

From 1931, she was the head of the natural history department of the Museu Nacional in Rio de Janeiro and published herpetological (amphibian and reptile studies) papers. Several Brazilian frogs and a genus of dinosaurs (Berthasaura) are named after her.

You can find this and more information on Wikipedia.

On our user interface, you can see for each person under “Additional sources” whether further details on the lives of our students and lecturers can be found in selected external directories, such as Wikipedia or Kalliope.
