5. Newsletter Datenbank CARLA der HMT Leipzig

Dear readers interested in the CARLA database of the University of Music and Theatre Leipzig,

after more than half a year has passed, we finally want to get back to you with some fantastic news!

Current state of completion

The recording and linking of data from the student records is still ongoing. By now 11.613 of the 12.776 student records until and including the inscription year 1918 (90%) have been fully processed. We are currently working on records for students who were matriculated in 1913.

As you can see, data recording will still take a little while. This is mainly due to some personnel changes that we would like to inform you about.

Changes in personnel

Since April of this year, our former full-time project employee Elisa Klar has moved to a regular position in the library of the HMT Leipzig and has taken on new tasks as a result. She will continue to be responsible for data recording in CARLA, as well as working on the conceptual and technical aspects of the project. However, data recording in particular will progress more slowly due to her new responsibilities.

We are pleased that Mrs Klar's project position will now be filled by Romy Gildemeister. She will enrich the work on the database by cleaning and updating data, as well as by indexing the concert programmes in the university's archive on musiconn.performance. A reference to the concerts of the people from CARLA catalogued in the event database of the FID Musik is planned.

Frankfurt, here we come!

We are also pleased to announce that we will be presenting our project at the annual conference of IAML Germany in Frankfurt am Main in September. With this presentation, we will introduce CARLA to the music library community and at the same time find potential partners for future extensions of the platform.

You can find the schedule for the entire annual conference of IAML Germany at https://iaml-deutschland.info/2024-frankfurt-main/

Preview: CARLA’s user interface

The time has finally come: after a year of development work, the first preview of our user interface for researching and using CARLA is online!

The web interface announced in the last newsletter is now ready for testing by a selected community.

You, dear readers, can also test the preview of our user interface. To do so, simply write an email to elisa.klar@hmt-leipzig.de to receive the login data. Afterwards go to https://carla.staging.hmt-leipzig.de/ and log in with the login data. You can then use CARLA to its full extent and try it out.

We would be very pleased to receive feedback of any kind, especially about errors that occur and experiences regarding the usability of the site. Please send an e-mail to elisa.klar@hmt-leipzig.de.

Thank you!

Once again, we would like to close this newsletter by saying thank you. Thank you for your interest in CARLA and hopefully testing it actively!

We hope that with your help, among others, we will soon be able to publish CARLA completely free of charge and thus make it available to the entire public for use.

If you have further questions or comments about our database CARLA or topics mentioned in this newsletter you can contact our project employee Elisa Klar (elisa.klar@hmt-leipzig.de).

We wish you a nice summer and happy hours testing CARLA!

PS:

As always, we would like to present a special student from our records to you.

Sometimes we have to do a lot of research to, for example, find out whether authority data that has already been created matches the people in our database. While doing so, we often discover very interesting and, in this case, cute things.

Our student with the enrolment number 10669 Gustav Martin Fritzsche became first violinist of the Dresden String Quartet and professor of violin at today's Carl Maria von Weber University of Music in Dresden after completing his studies.

During our research, however, someone stole the show from Professor Fritzsche - his dog Axel, who was photographed and immortalised by Hildegard Jäckel in 1957. You can view the pictures of the photogenic poodle on the Deutsche Fotothek website.
