4. Newsletter Datenbank CARLA der HMT Leipzig
Dear readers interested in the CARLA database of the University of Music and Theatre Leipzig,
as the year comes to an end we would like to take the opportunity to update you about the development of the project CARLA of the University of Music and Theatre Leipzig.
Our last newsletter was sent to you almost exactly six months ago and since then a lot of things have happened.
Current state of completion
The recording and linking of data from the student records is going along smoothly. By now 10025 of the 13.000 student records (76%) have been fully processed. We’ve reached the 20th century in terms of inscription year and are currently working on records for students who were matriculated in 1907.
The content side of the database development is therefore in its final stages and we are optimistic that we will be able to finish the data recording at the beginning of next year.
Last year our project employee was able to record, process and link a big amount of data.
In 2023 she finished processing 5838 student records. Broken down on her work days these are 28 data sets per day on average. In addition to this our employee processed and created 5966 authority data sets for people and 575 new authority data sets for geographical places. Therefore, she worked on 32 authority data sets per day on average.
Teaser of the user interface
Since June our IT developers Jan Grasnick and Johannes Löffler have been working on the user interface for CARLA in cooperation with the project team.
An early prototype is currently being tested by the project team to optimize the features and content. The next step is to release a beta version for further testing.
To give you the opportunity to take a first glance at the user interface, we would like to show you the following screenshots.
Thank you!
Once again, we would like to close this newsletter by saying thank you. Thank you for a great 2023! Thank you for your interest in this ambitious project of ours!
We hope that 2024 will be a successful year for CARLA and that we will be able to go live with the platform.
If you have further questions or comments about our database CARLA or topics mentioned in this newsletter you can contact our project employee Elisa Klar (elisa.klar@hmt-leipzig.de).
We wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
PS:
As always, we would like to present a special student from our records to you.
Because you see, our students don’t exclusively become musicians after their studies. Our former student Rudolf Swiderski (1878-1909) for example didn’t pursuit a career in music after his time at the Conservatory from 1898 to 1899, but became one of the best German chess masters of the early 20th century. He earned his best retrospectively calculated historic Elo rating of 2629 in April of 1904. The same year he won the DSB Congress in Coburg. Sadly, his chess career and his life were cut short when he committed suicide in August of 1909.
If there are chess players among us, you can have a look at some of Swiderski’s games via this link. We hope you have fun!
