Department of Strings | Harp

The Department of Strings – the oldest of its kind in Germany – is acknowledged as a "Department of Excellence" within the college. With strings used in all genres of music from the Baroque to the present day, the department represents the very heart of Western music. These days, professional string players are expected to have undergone academic training enabling them to accurately perform all these styles with historical awareness.
The Department of Strings at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater (originally founded by Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy in 1843) provides a broad range of training comprising highly professional instrumental instruction coupled with research into methodology and stylistic aspects as well as lectures on medical and physical issues. Since the department works closely with the Department of Early Music, this is the only place in Germany where string students can also study the theory and practice of historical developments in performance practice.
The Department of Strings is interdisciplinary by virtue of its cooperation with all other orchestral instruments as well as the departments of piano, voice and musical theatre, conducting and répétiteur training, and jazz and popular music.
