TRANSLATION OF ATHANASIUS KIRCHER’S “MUSURGIA UNIVERSALIS” (ROME 1650)

Athanasius Kircher’s Musurgia universalis, the baroque encyclopedia of the German Jesuit who lived and worked in Rome, is a pivotal source text for 17th century music and its discursive contexts. Nevertheless, the text is quoted rather seldom in contemporary German musicological publications, surely at least partly because of the language barrier. Roughly 1,000 pages of Kircher’s rather idiosyncratic Latin seem to excert a forbidding effect on modern readers.

After the first translation of excerpts from Kircher in 1667, this project aims at a complete German rendering of Musurgia universalis. It stems from the first version made by Günter Scheibel (†) which is to be revised and commented during the project’s run time.

You can see a short excerpt from the unrevised new translation here.

The project is a co-operation with the German Historical Institute in Rome.
